Here’s a handy little graphic from the Guardian’s data blog. It shows central government spending by government department using different sized bubbles.
Heres a link to the PDF: Public_spending_160909
Check out the 49,891% increase in spending by the Treasury, much of which has gone on bank bailouts.
It’s a great way of displaying data. Organisations, including government departments, should do something similar to show where their spending goes. I’m often surprised (though I suppose I shouldn’t be by now) by how many directors and senior managers are completely ignorant about where their organisations spend money and what they spend it on. Something like this presented to some of the executive teams I have worked with would give them a badly needed kick up the backside.

OK, this is entertaining. Can we get a T-shirt with this graphic on it? And while I’m commenting on things that entertain HR professionals, have you heard about Pink Slips and Parting Gifts? It’s my newly released business novel that HR professionals are starting to talk about! It’s the story of a memorable merger filled with juicy details only a human resources insider could know, but everyone in a corporate setting can appreciate. Check it out on Amazon, B&N, or your favorite online bookseller!
Have a great weekend!
